Colias interior is widespread in the boreal zone of North America, from British Columbia, southern Northwest Territories and eastern Oregon eastward through the Great Lakes regions to Newfoundland, and south to the central Appalachians (Map). It frequents shrubby forest openings, bogs, barrens, and burned areas. A medium-sized sulphur (wingspan 35-66 mm) with a conspicuous pink wing edges. The upperside is yellow with a black border (much reduced in the female); the underside of hindwing with a silvery spot encircled in pink. One flight a year, late May to early September. Adults often nectar on Bristly Sarsaparilla (Aralia hispida), the introduced Orange Hawkweed (Pilosella aurantiaca), etc. The caterpillar feeds on leaves of various blueberries (Vaccinium spp., Ericaceae).
